A rebus uses pictures to express words. When the Sumerians adapted pictographs representing things to letters signing discrete language sounds, they took a significant step in the evolution of a true alphabet. Excluding that, the synesthesia of the rebus parallels the riotous mumbo jumbo of sights, slogans, and sounds assailing modern man from all directions. Grotesque distortions take root in our public dialogue; for instance, whether flying or crudely painted on a board, a US flag outside a private home has come to mean White domination and nationalism, anything but equality and democracy; similarly, in this piece, the instantly recognizable image of Elvis has nothing to do with Elvis.
